Many people have heard the buzz about beeswax wraps but are still a bit nervous to try them. How do they work? How do I use them? What’s the right way to clean them?

These are just some of the questions new customers ask me so I have put together a simple guide to using and caring for your Bee Green Food Wrap.

What can I wrap?

Basically, you use a beeswax wrap as a replacement for waxed paper or plastic cling film to preserve food. Our wraps are made with NZ beeswax, tree resin and organic jojoba oil which have wonderful antibacterial properties, preserving food effectively and naturally without the need for harmful plastics.

Our sandwich wraps can be used to wrap food on the go such as sandwiches, pitas or wraps for office or school lunches.

In the fridge, our snack wraps are perfect for wrapping fresh produce like herbs, vegetables and fruit (except pineapple). They are great for awkward produce that is difficult to preserve well like half a lemon or avocado or the open end of a cut cucumber.

greenbeeswrap are wonderful to wrap around a block of cheese before you store it in the fridge. You’ll save so much and say goodbye to mould and crusty edges which no one likes!

We have a variety of wrap sizes to choose from which are ideal for covering bowls, plates, platters and casseroles.

How do I use my beeswax wrap?

Use the warmth of your hands to cover the wrap around your food like a parcel or shape the wrap over the top of a bowl, gently sealing the edges over the rim.

The wrap will maintain its shape and seal when it cools after a few seconds. The beeswax in the fabric sticks to itself, not your food, creating a hygienic seal that still allows the food to breathe which prevents spoilage.

A few no-nos

Remember that our beeswax wraps only like the natural heat of your hands so it’s a definite no to hot water, microwaves, ovens and dishwashers. Also, please do not store raw meat in a wrap!

How do I clean and care for my beeswax wrap?

Clean your beeswax wrap by holding it under cool running water, using a mild dishwashing soap if needed. If its just a few crumbs, just a quick wipe with a clean damp cloth will do the trick! It can be placed on your dish rack to air dry or patted gently between a folded tea towel. Then roll or fold the wrap and store in a beautiful basket on your counter or in a drawer with your tea towels.

Our quality beeswax wraps can last for up to a year when cared for correctly — in fact I still have some that are going strong after four years. When it becomes soft and doesn’t stick to itself, it’s time to cut the wrap into strips and add to your compost or use as a natural fire starter. We even use our strips to tie tomato plants!

A beautiful way to save money and our planet

Our wraps are not only functional — they are also beautiful and will save you money while caring for our environment. All of our fabrics are gorgeous and you have the option to choose a design you love from our drop-down menus when you purchase online.

If you have any questions, I am always available to help. There are no silly questions! Get in touch with me here to ask anything or share your clever ways to use our wraps.
